Kids of Cross, v 1.0

Last night was the first of the Kids of Mud cyclocross workshops - about 10 from Olympia plus about 40? from Wolseley Wheels. Older racers take note: if some of these kids take up 'cross racing, you've got your work cut out for you. These kids are fast, and a bunch of them had full speed, 4-step dismounts figured out by the end of the session. What a talented bunch. Everyone seemed to have fun learning cross skills, and then most riders opted to take part in a superfun/superfast relay race, which came down to a sprint on the final lap. Wow!

If there any other Kids of Mud clubs out there interested in doing a one-night 'cross clinic, contact us (call Tom at Olympia, 888-4586) and we'd be happy to set something up.

Being out at (soggy) LaBarriere park last night brought back memories of the races we had there in 2001 (I think it was) and 2002. The 2001 race was one of the first races organized in Manitoba, and I don't think we really understood what makes a good course (the answer, by the way, is a large measure of speed). I think if a race was organized there now we'd look at the landscape in a totally different way, using the field and path surfaces a lot more (and the trails a lot less). Oh, and we'd look for more mud.
