cross-labs

if you are wondering about cross-labs and exactly what they are - well, they're a chance for new riders and experienced riders to get together to learn and hone their cyclocross riding skills. we meet on wednesday evenings (will now start at 6:00 because of fading light) and saturday mornings. wednesday evening rides alternate between omand's creek park and the forks (meet at the skating rink beside the main building). saturday's start at 8:00 and we alternate between whittier park and the forks. there is no cross-lab this saturday, september 30th, because of the civic park cross race, but we will continue the following week, october 7th at the forks. attendance at the labs has been growing, starting with 2 hardy riders for the first lab (okay, we started at 7:30 in the morning on that one - i don't know what we were thinking when we initially picked that time), to 10 riders last night with 4 first timers. after the labs we get together for a coffee (allan r. set the highwater mark for this with coffee and croissants at his place - this level might not be ever achieved again) or a drink, its a great way to get to know some of your fellow cyclocross riders.

September Meeting Minutes

MUCR Planning Meeting

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Belgian Club

In attendance: Jamie Dyker, Alan Robertson, Hal Loewen, Tomek Jasiakiewicz, Chris Huebner, Deanna Wiebe, Scott Wiebe, Ian Hall

1. Cross Lab Schedule
a. Saturday skills clinics will start September 15th, and will alternate between Whittier Park and the Forks (skating rink). Meet at 7 a.m. September 15th ride is at Whittier Park.
b. Wednesday morning training rides (no coaching/mentoring) will start September 12th, at Omand’s Creek (Halter) Park, alternating with the Forks (skating rink).
c. Schedule for Cross Lab rides to be on poster, and posted on web site.

2. Season overview and discussion
a. Tom to follow up with Arlene Woodcock about commissaire’s preference for numbers (response: either pinned road number or mountain bike plate is fine. If you have multiple bikes, must use road number)
b. Altona race scheduling change: move form 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
c. Deanna and Scott offered to provide a special prize of a custom wool jersey (handmade by Deanna) to one randomly drawn woman and man at the November 18th race. To be eligible, riders must have completed four other cross events and be in attendance at the 11/18 race.
d. Scott to investigate timing of Minnesota state championships (possible conflict with 11/18 race, which may lead to consideration of changing date of his race).

3. Communications
a. Cowbells – MUCR has access to some cowbells which may be sold as a fundraiser to support the operations of the club, especially as they relate to outreach to kids and to current and potential cross racers. Bells are to be stickered (Tom will have stickers before 9/23) and sold for $10 each. Scott volunteered to serve as seller and treasurer. All organizers in attendance agreed this was a good idea and had no problem with having MUCR bells sold at their events.
b. T-shirts – Tom is working on a “more cowbell” t-shirt design.
c. Web Site – Hal has made contact with a web designer willing to develop 3 pages (splash, links, blog-fed news page) for MUCR, and will be registering for a Flickr account. ETA: soon.
d. Poster: Tom to email to Ian for printing. (Update: Done, printed 50 copies, of which about 40 were delivered to Olympia for distribution)
e. Banner – Tom to measure barrier dimensions, send to Ian who will get quotes.
f. Press release – discussion of need to watch for interesting news angles and promote to press.

4. Other new business
a. Tom to inquire with MCA/Jon Benson re: possibilities for short-term licensing for visiting US riders (Update: at least 3 riders from MN and possibly 2 from ND are planning on attending Manitoba cross races, most like double cross or Provincial Championships)

5. Skinsuits, jerseys, etc.
a. PSA: Fort Garry bike club is planning to do a bulk order of “Nordic Cross” long sleeve wool jerseys. Contact Chris, Hal, or Matt Handscombe (hope I spelling that right) for details.
b. PSA: Another part of FGBC is planning to order longsleeve argyle skinsuits. Contact Chris for details.

Next meeting at the call of the chair.

In keeping with the new policy of a rotating meeting chair, the next chairperson will be Hal Loewen.

Adjourned at 9:30 p.m.

Long Overdue Update

Wow. All of a sudden it's mid-August. So much has happened in the last while:

- more Kids of Cross clinics (and more impressive riding from the KoM crews)
- new portable barriers built for the Cross Lab training rides coming this fall
- a MUCR-supported cyclocross display at the Belgian Pavilion during folklorama
- a first-ever Belgian Triathlon coming up August 25th (details at www.cycling.mb.ca), including a cross race -- everyone welcome, no MCA license necessary.
- a new mucr.ca domain registered with a web page on the way soon.
- and cross season planning is under way.... first race is less than a month away!

About this last point, I keep getting asked about course design for cyclocross. For the record, here’s a summary of the main course design rules:

-Minimum 2.5km lap (max 3.5km), of which 90% is rideable
-Whole course shall be a minimum of 3 metres wide
-Bridges should be 4m wide, have non-slip surfaces and have protective barriers on both sides
-Starting stretch shall be 300m long and 6m wide, and as straight as possible, with no downhills
-First corner shall be less than 90 degrees
-Finishing stretch shall be 200m long, straight and flat or uphill
-Maximum 4 obstacles, each no longer than 80m
-Only one of these obstacles is to be artificial, which shall be 2 wooden planks 4m apart and 40cm high (recommended that elite women and junior men bypass this obstacle)

Source: http://www.uci.ch/english/about/rules/ch05_cyclox.pdf

In Manitoba, where we typically get 40-60 riders out for a cross race, some of these rules are not quite as relevent. Nonetheless, as an organizer, I always strive to meet the intent of the rules (which I could summarize as (1) that the race is fast, (2) that you can pass anywhere on the lap, and (3) most of all, that the course is safe).

Another guideline for Manitoba cross courses, especially for events in late October and into November is that it's advisable to have some place to keep warm and dry off - for riders pre/post event, for race officials, and for spectators. Frostbite is a drag.

What do you think?

Kids of Cross, v 1.0

Last night was the first of the Kids of Mud cyclocross workshops - about 10 from Olympia plus about 40? from Wolseley Wheels. Older racers take note: if some of these kids take up 'cross racing, you've got your work cut out for you. These kids are fast, and a bunch of them had full speed, 4-step dismounts figured out by the end of the session. What a talented bunch. Everyone seemed to have fun learning cross skills, and then most riders opted to take part in a superfun/superfast relay race, which came down to a sprint on the final lap. Wow!

If there any other Kids of Mud clubs out there interested in doing a one-night 'cross clinic, contact us (call Tom at Olympia, 888-4586) and we'd be happy to set something up.

Being out at (soggy) LaBarriere park last night brought back memories of the races we had there in 2001 (I think it was) and 2002. The 2001 race was one of the first races organized in Manitoba, and I don't think we really understood what makes a good course (the answer, by the way, is a large measure of speed). I think if a race was organized there now we'd look at the landscape in a totally different way, using the field and path surfaces a lot more (and the trails a lot less). Oh, and we'd look for more mud.

barrier use policy

seems to me that I was suppose to write a barrier use policy. in light of the barrier meeting tonight here is what i have come up with so far. please send me your comments and suggestions.

PURPOSE:

The Manitoba Union of Cyclocross Riders (MUCR) has made available a set of portable cyclocross barriers which can be used by Manitoba Cycling Association (MCA) members for the training, practicing, and use in any cyclocross races.

POLICY and PROCEDURES:

1. Purpose: The Manitoba Union of Cyclocross Riders (MUCR) has made available a set of portable cyclocross barriers which can be used by Manitoba Cycling Association (MCA) members for the training, practicing, and use in any cyclocross race.

2. Priority Use: Priority use of the barriers will be given first to individuals, clubs or organizations that are running a MCA sanctioned cyclocross race. If no sanctioned race is being held on a given day, use of the barriers will be given to users on a first come basis

3. Users: Any member in good standing with the Manitoba Cycling Association may use the barriers by booking them through the assigned MUCR representative.

4. Booking: Individuals, clubs and organizations wishing to use the MUCR barriers will contact the appointed MUCR representative to book the barriers. Contact information for the MUCR barrier can be found at the MUCR website: www.mucr.ca.

5. Pickup: Barriers will be picked up at a location and time as determined by the MUCR representative in charge of the barriers (contact information for the MUCR barrier can be found at the MUCR website: www.mucr.ca.). Locations may change several times during a season depending on which MUCR representative is in charge of storing and or transporting the barriers to a training, practice, or race.

6. Return: At the time of the booking, the borrower and the MUCR representative will agree upon time and place where the barriers will be returned. It is the sole responsibility of the borrower to return the barriers to the place at the time agreed upon. Failure to return the barriers to an appointed MUCR representative at the agreed upon time and place may result in the individual, club, or organization from borrowing the barriers in the future.

7. Repair/Replacement: It is expected that the barriers will be returned in the same condition they were received. Individuals, clubs and organizations will be asked to pay for the repair or replacement of the barriers in the event of any damage or loss of the barriers while they are in the possession of the individuals, clubs and organizations.

4.17.2007

What do you think?

MUCR is crafting a mission statement.

Because our group is kind of a strange animal, and we need to explain what we are/aren't, and because we don't want to diffuse the good energy of other clubs who are putting on races, etc., we think it would be helpful to be able to define ourselves and our raison d'etre. And it would help keep us focused, which never hurts.

Sample for discussion:

The Manitoba Union of Cyclocross Riders (MUCR) exists to help develop cyclocross riders, events and culture in Manitoba. As a cyclocross umbrella group affiliated with the Manitoba Cycling Association (MCA), MUCR works to support and coordinate the efforts of other MCA clubs for the benefit of the sport of cyclocross.

What do you think? All comments appreciated.

Support for selling bells @ ~$5 each as fundraiser. Consideration to partnering with XC ski association or selling through bike shops should be undertaken. Plan to be discussed at next meeting.

Next meeting tentatively booked forMonday, April 16th, 2007 at Belgian Club, at 7 p.m.

2.25.2007

early cross

borrowed from a site called blackbird some very cool pictures and a description of a course from that era...nuts...our mountain bike courses are not that tough

THE RACE COURSE

The Critérium International de Cross Country Cyclo-Pedéstre created by l'Auto and organized jointly by l'Auto and the U.V.F., will be held over the following route of 20.2 km.

The start will be at precisely 3 p.m. at the town hall of Suresnes. Climb the grand boulevard which leads to the fort of Mont-Valérian and before the fort turn left on the strategic boulevard, cross the Rueil road over the steep path of the tile factory, take the first track on the right which skirts the racetrack and continue straight while following the barrier of the hippodrome until the Saint-Cloud to Rueil road, turn right on this, circumventing the racecourse, follow this road to the Buzenval monument, which is 200 meters on the left, take the track which leads directly to the monument (the first control).

From this point, the track will be marked with papers.

Go around the wall of the Buzenval school property, and, arriving at the top of Garches, enter the Saint-Cueufa woods, along the fence of the sheep pasture.

Continue through the Saint-Cueufa woods until the Celle-Saint-Cloud (the second control).

The track will then return directly to the edge of the Saint-Cueufa lake and steeply climb, to the wall of the Buzenval school property (the third control).

Turn left along the wall to drop down 300 meters into the Trou-du-Diable, cross the river issuing from the Saint-Cueufa pond, and towards Malmaison. The track will then follow the valley to the first house in Malmaison (the fourth control).

Go back up again to the right to enter Rueil via the Rueil - Saint-Cloud road, continue to the right until the porte du Long-Boyau, where one will find the wall of the Buzenval property; turn left and follow the aforementioned wall keeping it on your right, until the place Saint-Nicholas, in Buzenval (the fifth control).

Turn right and 50 meters further make a right angle turn to the left.

At this point the course markings end.

Continue straight along the Rueil - Saint-Cloud road, heading towards the latter city, passing in front of the Buzenval monument.

Return to Mont-Valérian by the same route as the outward journey.

The finish line will be on the strategic boulevard, 100 meters before the turn on to the boulevard climbed at the start.

In addition to the five fixed controls indicated above there will be four surprise controls and no voluntary or involuntary error will be permitted.

CONTROLS

The competitors will be provided with numbers which they will have to wear in the back below their belt and on their left. Each nation will be identified by color, as follows:

Belgium: yellow numbers;

France: tricolour numbers;

Italy: green numbers;

Luxembourg: blue numbers;

Switzerland: red numbers.

At controls 1-5, the numbers of the competitors will be noted by officials installed for this purpose.

To ensure passage through the Trou-du-Diable, two controllers provided with white flags are appointed, and the competitors will have to exit the Trou-du-Diable between the two flags, which will be placed 4 meters apart. Any competitor not conforming to this regulation will be disqualified.

Changing bicycles is completely prohibited and to put French and foreign competitors on equal footing, the machines will be marked at the start and marks will be checked at the finish. Marking will be apparent, in a manner such that the officials can check racers at each control to make sure they are on the same bicycle they started with.. Any infringement of this rule will result in disqualification.

Ice Bike Cross Action

Although most people around these parts consider Woodcock Cyclework's IceBike race to be the first race of the season, the event photos (by David Lipnowski, posted on Manitoba Cycling Association web site) make it look more like the ultimate event of the 2006-07 cross season. Could these be new mUcr recruits?

MUCR Planning Meeting Minutes

Background: With an eye to developing as much momentum for cyclocross development in Manitoba in the 2007-08 season, a number of projects aimed at current racers, casual cyclists, and especially kids are proposed. If all goes well with these "first steps", we'll have some new events; new training/learning opportunities; and a cohesive, growing cyclocross community. Down the road, larger projects might be up for consideration - like developing a cyclocross facility, making a bid for nationals, or...? If you're interested in what you see here (in these minutes and on this blog) give us a jangle.
