1. Kids of Mud:
MUCR “Intro to Cross” Invitation from Alter Ego KoM club (June 14). (accepted) Brief discussion of developing an agenda for a kids’ orientation – to be discussed further at next meeting. Postcards, stickers and a letter for parents to be prepared prior to June 1.
2. Cyclocross Course Site Form:
Last meeting, it was proposed that in order to make it easier to plan events, in order to sustainably manage turf areas used for cyclocross, and in order to be able to demonstrate stewardship of parks/courses, that a course tracking form be developed. Ian presented draft of form. Approved. Ian will send template to other MUCRs.
New business: course planning tips/policy (e.g. stay off playing fields) could be included on MUCR web site.
3. Altona Event:
Interest from some FGBC members in running an Altona event. Hal to discuss with Chris Huebner re: timing/logistics (could be part of a double cross weekend?)
4. Race Calendar:
General discussion of this year’s full calendar. Tom inquired about possibility of changing date of Sept 9 event due to conflict with SK mountain bike enduro, suggested perhaps moving it to September 29 to make a double cross weekend. For future discussion with Woodcock club.
5. MUCR club representation:
Ian to formally invite Bill Algeo from Woodcock to next meeting. (standing invitation to those interested in CX development remains in place)
6. MUCR web site:
Blog is now active, and domain (www.mucr.ca) is registered for web site. (Blog can feed on to web site). Discussion of possible content (courses, tips, event news, rides, equipment, etc.). Hal personally paid for registration of domain ($100 for 2 years).
7. Club affiliation with MCA:
Decision taken to affiliate at “Level C”, for insurance purposes. Form completed, in to fax in with $25.00 fee. Hal agreed to serve as president for 1 year, Allan to serve as coach.
8. Posters and Stickers:
Tom developing ideas – can now include web address. Poster and postcard to include event dates. To be printed prior to conclusion of KoM events (June 1).
Tom will also be developing a colour scheme (so far we’re at: white)
9. Barriers:
Confirmation that a set of portable barriers would be useful to clubs. Ian advised that MCA site development fund may be accessible if barriers can be lent to any MCA club. Also discussion of asking shops/clubs for sponsorship of individual barriers (token amount). Prior to seeking funding, a project budget needs to be developed = designs need to be finalized. Design meeting to happen in April in Jamie and Karin’s garage (date to be confirmed in early April).
10. Training rides
Concept: meet at coffee shops, rotate area of city (it was felt that west/St. James, south/St. Vital and east-central/St. Boniface would be best fits), organizer to choose venue for ride.
Timing: weekly, starting in August on weekday evening @ 6 p.m.
Discussion of how ride would be organized – skills + pick-up race, streamed to give (additional/separate) attention to newer riders.
***NOTE***: should we confirm the day of the week for inclusion on posters/postcards?
11. Belgian Club
Support for seeking club affiliation with Belgian Club of Winnipeg, as they could offer meeting space, etc. and we share mutual goals. Also, discussion of Belgian triathlon to be revived. Ian to follow up.
12. Fundraising:
Winter hats: would be about $25+ each, minimum order of 25. Limited support for this as a fundraiser, though agreement it would be neat. Hal to consider possible follow up to this.
Cow bells: cheapest source (American) for promotional cow bells (3” tall) is about $2 each (order of 50). Allan to check Shippam for Canadian source. Support for selling bells @ ~$5 each as fundraiser. Consideration to partnering with XC ski association or selling through bike shops should be undertaken. Plan to be discussed at next meeting.

THE RACE COURSE
The Critérium International de Cross Country Cyclo-Pedéstre created by l'Auto and organized jointly by l'Auto and the U.V.F., will be held over the following route of 20.2 km.
The start will be at precisely 3 p.m. at the town hall of Suresnes. Climb the grand boulevard which leads to the fort of Mont-Valérian and before the fort turn left on the strategic boulevard, cross the Rueil road over the steep path of the tile factory, take the first track on the right which skirts the racetrack and continue straight while following the barrier of the hippodrome until the Saint-Cloud to Rueil road, turn right on this, circumventing the racecourse, follow this road to the Buzenval monument, which is 200 meters on the left, take the track which leads directly to the monument (the first control).
From this point, the track will be marked with papers.
Go around the wall of the Buzenval school property, and, arriving at the top of Garches, enter the Saint-Cueufa woods, along the fence of the sheep pasture.
Continue through the Saint-Cueufa woods until the Celle-Saint-Cloud (the second control).
The track will then return directly to the edge of the Saint-Cueufa lake and steeply climb, to the wall of the Buzenval school property (the third control).
Turn left along the wall to drop down 300 meters into the Trou-du-Diable, cross the river issuing from the Saint-Cueufa pond, and towards Malmaison. The track will then follow the valley to the first house in Malmaison (the fourth control).
Go back up again to the right to enter Rueil via the Rueil - Saint-Cloud road, continue to the right until the porte du Long-Boyau, where one will find the wall of the Buzenval property; turn left and follow the aforementioned wall keeping it on your right, until the place Saint-Nicholas, in Buzenval (the fifth control).
Turn right and 50 meters further make a right angle turn to the left.
At this point the course markings end.
Continue straight along the Rueil - Saint-Cloud road, heading towards the latter city, passing in front of the Buzenval monument.
Return to Mont-Valérian by the same route as the outward journey.
The finish line will be on the strategic boulevard, 100 meters before the turn on to the boulevard climbed at the start.
In addition to the five fixed controls indicated above there will be four surprise controls and no voluntary or involuntary error will be permitted.
CONTROLS
The competitors will be provided with numbers which they will have to wear in the back below their belt and on their left. Each nation will be identified by color, as follows:
Belgium: yellow numbers;
France: tricolour numbers;
Italy: green numbers;
Luxembourg: blue numbers;
Switzerland: red numbers.
At controls 1-5, the numbers of the competitors will be noted by officials installed for this purpose.
To ensure passage through the Trou-du-Diable, two controllers provided with white flags are appointed, and the competitors will have to exit the Trou-du-Diable between the two flags, which will be placed 4 meters apart. Any competitor not conforming to this regulation will be disqualified.
Changing bicycles is completely prohibited and to put French and foreign competitors on equal footing, the machines will be marked at the start and marks will be checked at the finish. Marking will be apparent, in a manner such that the officials can check racers at each control to make sure they are on the same bicycle they started with.. Any infringement of this rule will result in disqualification.

Ice Bike Cross Action
Although most people around these parts consider Woodcock Cyclework's IceBike race to be the first race of the season, the event photos (by David Lipnowski, posted on Manitoba Cycling Association web site) make it look more like the ultimate event of the 2006-07 cross season. Could these be new mUcr recruits?

MUCR Planning Meeting Minutes
Background: With an eye to developing as much momentum for cyclocross development in Manitoba in the 2007-08 season, a number of projects aimed at current racers, casual cyclists, and especially kids are proposed. If all goes well with these "first steps", we'll have some new events; new training/learning opportunities; and a cohesive, growing cyclocross community. Down the road, larger projects might be up for consideration - like developing a cyclocross facility, making a bid for nationals, or...? If you're interested in what you see here (in these minutes and on this blog) give us a jangle.

1. Facilities
- Discussion of permanent cross course: decision was taken that it was too ambitious for ‘year 1’ – but good idea, to be revisited in future
- An alternative proposal for achieving a related goal (having good cross courses available to ride) was approved: maintaining a file of information on identified courses, including their topography, condition and date of last use. This would enable rotation of courses, fewer turf management issues.
- To be included on web site (discussed below) – information about cyclocross turf management practices, including before and after photos of courses (e.g. Belgian Club)
- Actions: Ian to set up template for tracking course information (present for discussion March 17)
2. Communications
- Key audiences: Kids of Mud, current MCA racers, cyclists who don’t race
- Venues: KoM events, bike shops, internet (MUCR site and MCA site, others)
Web Site
- Agreement that a MUCR web site should be started, with a target launch date of May 2007.
- Prior to web site launch, start a blog (can be tied into web site in the future)
- Should be linked from MCA, FGBC, any other interested clubs
- Tone should be “legitimate, clean, fun” (and kept separate from FUCR)
- Agreement to seek a partner to assist with hosting
- Actions: Hal to register blog domain (ASAP), speak to potential hosting partners – discuss cost (prior to March 17), and to develop a proposal for web site structure (also for March 17)
Posters
- Should be in place by May (prior to wind up of Kids of Mud)
- Should point reader to web site (i.e. need web address sorted out before printing)
- Actions: Tom to design poster (before April 15)
Stickers
- Proposed as a way to spread the word/web address
- Should have 1 and 2 colour options on coloured vinyl
- Actions: Tom to design sticker (before April 15), Ian to speak to printing partners (before April 15)
3. Barriers
- Yes, we should build some barriers for use during training rides
- They should be somewhat portable
- They must be height adjustable (to accommodate kids)
- Agreed to a separate, in-depth discussion of how to construct, when Tom is available
- MCA may be able to contribute funds to construction costs
- If they are to be lent to others, a borrowing policy should be in place (and perhaps a deposit?)
- Actions: All to attend a future meeting (March?) to discuss construction, Hal to propose a borrowing policy (prior to May 1), Ian to investigate MCA support (by March 17)
4. Training Rides
- Yes, we should have training rides (thus should be MCA affiliated, as per below), starting in the late spring/summer (once the ground is dry)
- Various scheduling options were discussed (including every non-race Wednesday and every alternate Thursday) – agreed that proposals should be developed and presented at next meeting, by which time MCA calendar should be posted.
- Rides could include:
o kids (mini-MUCRs), seek involvement of Tim Loewen, Bill Algeo or other KoM parents);
o women (she-MUCRs or MUCRettes?), seek involvement of Naomi, Deanna, Moni and other women;
o newbies (requiring MUCR-mentors who would work with first-timers at each ride to build basic skills).
- Actions: Ian to deal with affiliation (present affiliation plan at next meeting), all to propose ride schedules and ride features (time/place/plans) at next meeting
5. Kids of Mud Engagement
- arrange fun clinic/demo at final (or close to final) KoM event in June
- hand out stickers with web address at this event (and/or prior to)
- invite parents (with a letter) to get their kids involved in cyclocross in the fall, and to participate in MUCR rides through the summer
- Actions: Ian to write letter (April 15), all to participate in planning meeting re: clinic/demo (TBA – April?)
6. Fundraising
- minimal fundraising may be required to pay for web hosting, barriers, stickers, affiliation, etc.
- MCA may be able to assign us a Bingo
- (Not discussed at meeting – but for your consideration) Could link to a charity/cause – e.g. clean air.
- Could sell hats/winter hats/cowbells – best done in late summer/during cross season, but need to plan now
- Actions: Ian to discuss Bingo with MCA, Hal to get pricing on Champ-sys or other hats/winter hats, Ian to get pricing on cowbells (all for next meeting), all to consider possibility of linking to charity/non-profit
